Calligraphy as Diplomacy: East Meets West in Dialogue

Shown in the Philomathean Gallery of College Hall, this exhibition placed my Eastern calligraphy and Chinese ink paintings in conversation with my Western acrylic, sketch, and mixed media work. Structured around the four chapters of my accompanying book- Their Story, Form, Ways of Seeing, and Influence, the exhibition explored how each artistic tradition emerges from distinct cultural and philosophical roots.
The Western works reflect the legacy of Renaissance humanism, scientific optics, and a commitment to realism, anatomy, and material precision. The Eastern pieces draw from Daoist naturalism, Chinese aesthetic philosophy, and the concept of Qi - the vital energy that emphasizes movement, breath, and the expression of inner essence. Presented together, these works invited viewers to slow down and notice the questions each tradition asks differently: What does it mean to capture a mountain? To render a face? To leave the paper bare?
Where does ink end and oil begin? This book traces the line between two artistic worlds: Eastern traditions that breathe through empty space, and Western traditions that carve form from light. Through the work of Penn Chinese Calligraphy members, we explore what each tradition reveals about how we see, what we value, and how culture shapes the art we make.
